The famous French architect and designer Jean Nouvel has revealed his latest spectacular project, an underground resort hidden inside the AlUla’s cave dwellings called “Sharaan”.
Located in the heart of the Sharaan nature reserve, an innovative project inspired by the nearby wonders of Hegra, the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in Saudi Arabia.

“Our project must not jeopardize what humanity and time have consecrated”, Nouvel points out. “Our project celebrates the Nabatean spirit without caricaturing it. This creation becomes a true cultural act”.
The French designer sees this resort as an opportunity to create a strong spatial, sensory and emotional experience at the boundaries of nature, architecture and art. A place where the sound, musicality, harshness, power and complexity of nature are everywhere, from the finely cut stones on the balconies to the unique granularity of each rock face, everything becomes a work of art in itself.
Inspired by the ancient Nabatean people, a trading people of ancient Arabia, Jean Nouvel has created something unique, sculpting the rocky walls to build a comfortable resort that will protect his guests from the scorching heat of summer and the cold of winter.
A project that celebrates the Nabatean spirit without caricatures, building within the landscape itself rather than competing with it.
However, to see this complete wonder we have to wait a little longer, the work on the 40 luxurious rooms will be finished in 2024.
