The subconscious images of SillDA

A continuous clash between the rational and the surreal governs the human mind, which, as soon as it tries to get off the tracks of ordinariness, self-constrains itself to make an abrupt maneuver to avoid derailment. Reality keeps us anchored to the evidence and teaches us that only what we see is plausible. Imagination attempts to prevail, dominating the night and our dreams, where anything is possible, where a brain can be formed from snakes and where a tongue can become a strawberry to eat, just like in SillDA‘s illustrations. The Korean illustrator collects the images that her subconscious produces and translates them into illustrations, indulging those unspeakable feelings and contradictory emotions that most people try to stifle. The artist invites us to embrace our own perversions and cultivate the external suggestions that attempt to alter our “precise and meticulous” view of reality.SillDA’s illustrations oscillate between beauty and disquiet, creating a parallel world in which surreal things happen. A spider replaces a woman’s eyelashes, a goldfish bowl becomes an ashtray, two butterflies tear the skin off a hand, and a heart becomes a thirst-quenching cocktail. Each illustration, particularly rich in detail and bright colors, highlights an unexpressed desire, which finds space and becomes a protagonist.
