The illustrations of Mau Lencinas, aka 199hates, burst off the screen, loudly proclaiming their references to contemporary pop culture.

Neo-gangster manga, hip-hop music and sportswear brands become new contemporary icons, part of a new religion born from the pop culture of the 1970s and shaped over the following decades.

The street is an incubator. Suburban culture is the driving force and lifeblood behind artistic and stylistic trends, setting the rules of fashion and the contemporary art system. Lifestyles and consumer behaviours emerge among young people, who create, embrace and ultimately validate them over time.

The work of 199hates pushes this street style to the extreme. Blending Akira with Tank Girl, it shakes up the 1990s while winking at a new generation of sneakerheads. The colours come from skate culture and graffiti art. They are the colours of the street, vivid and faded at the same time.

A tribute to underground counterculture, increasingly tied to and exploited by the dynamics of consumerism.
