On November 18, the new Spirale Gallery exhibition space inaugurated in Milan. The first exhibition in the gallery is a solo show dedicated to the work of Simone D’Auria, artist born in ’76 who revisits the classics of art, contaminating them with intrusions of color and his alter ego. 

The artist’s works take up the colorful and communicative language of Pop Art and some of the most recognizable subjects of art history, from Expressionism to the cuts in the canvases of Lucio Fontana. Paintings and sculptures are social critiques, on consumerism and plastic overproduction as in the case of the Spoon series. The spoon returns as an element of continuous intrusion, a simple object that signals the presence of the artist with irony. Mr.Spoon – this is the name of the character – with eyes inspired by those of KAWS’ subjects, dances like in Matisse’s paintings and screams like in Edvard Munch’s most famous painting.

Other series by Simone D’Auria exhibited at Galleria Spirale are “Sorry Fontana“, irreverent mispronunciation of Lucio Fontana’s canvases, but also the one created together with the Zoological Wildlife Foundation of Miami, in support of animals at risk of extinction. Monkeys and tigers help trigger a discourse in defense of nature and human interventions that are compromising its balance.
