The studios Sulkin Askenazi and Alterego, on the occasion of last October’s Design Week México, completely rewrote the visual imagination of the gym with Sutura, transforming a functional environment into an immersive installation. Their radical choice stems from a simple idea: using a single material as a total language. That material is denim, rendered in a deep indigo that envelops every surface, from the machines to the architectural volumes, all the way to the smallest details.

The result overturns every expectation. The gym in Mexico City no longer appears as a place dedicated to training, but as a sculptural landscape — a soft, monochromatic continuum that reinterprets familiar forms under a new light. Denim brings with it an entire cultural universe — fashion, everyday life, the durability of the fabric — but here it is moved onto completely unexpected terrain. By covering equipment, padding, and load-bearing structures, the project erases the typical fragmentation of fitness spaces and replaces it with a single material presence.

The reference to figures such as James Turrell, Harry Nuriev and Glenn Martens is evident in the handling of color and in the ability to manipulate perception. Light, filtering across the indigo surfaces, creates almost theatrical volumes and shadows, where every movement of the body stands out with greater intensity. The gym thus becomes a controlled visual field, a room that responds to light just as much as to the movements of its users.

The Sutura project therefore offers a radical reinterpretation of the gym typology: a place where material coherence, sculptural treatment and physical gesture operate as a single design statement. An interior that does not merely host movement, but interprets it, absorbs it, and transforms it into spatial experience.
