Supreme has always accustomed us to collaborations that go beyond the simple concept of team-up. This tradition continues to be a peculiar feature of the skate brand founded by James Jebbia and the latest collaboration in order of time is a clear example.
Supreme is planning for tomorrow, April 28, the release of a capsule collection in collaboration with Gummo – featuring images from the film and original artwork by director Harmony Korine – 1997 film that marks the directorial debut of the then 23-year-old Korine, who also signed the last campaign of the American brand starring Julia Fox.
Gummo is an experimental film set in Xenia, Ohio, a small town hit by a tornado in 1974 but actually shot in the director’s hometown of Nashville. The film is as faithful a representation as possible of the experiences that shaped Korine’s growing up in Tennessee. A series of unconnected stories in a Xenia marred by violence, poverty, destruction, abuse, loneliness, boredom, absurdity, tenderness and surreal humor.
Gummo is a bold visual and narrative experimentation that is disturbing and paranoid. Many of the film’s scenes are improvised or based on hunches of the moment. The editing almost seems to be a collage between traditional 35mm film, VHS footage, Video8 and Polaroids taken by the cast themselves.
A dark, fragmented and unique film that has become an absolute cult of independent cinema and that today becomes the fulcrum around which Supreme has built its latest caspule collection.
The Supreme/Gummo capsule collection will be released on Thursday, April 28 both online and in Supreme’s physical stores.
