With Ohana Hatake, his independent footwear project, Takashi Murakami continues to transform everyday objects into design pieces, and the new Surippa Onsen Collection II proves it perfectly.

Inspired by Japanese onsen culture — traditional hot springs where time slows down and comfort becomes a ritual — the new release introduces three fresh colorways: Purple Ash, Mineral Blue and Birch. Soft, calming tones that echo the quiet atmosphere of Japanese thermal baths.

The Surippa model is a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional Japanese indoor slippers, but Murakami pushes them beyond the domestic setting. The minimal silhouette, built in soft, molded EVA foam, is designed to follow everyday movement both indoors and outdoors, turning a traditionally private footwear piece into a lifestyle object.

The most interesting detail sits underfoot: the durable rubber outsole features Murakami’s iconic flower motif carved into the tread, an almost hidden element that adds a narrative layer to the design. It’s a typical gesture from the Japanese artist, embedding his visual language even in the least visible areas, turning every step into an extension of his aesthetic universe.

Ohana Hatake, born as Murakami’s first footwear brand, continues to move between contemporary art, Japanese culture and functional design. The Surippa Onsen Collection II reinforces this direction: essential silhouette, calming palette and hidden details that tell a broader story.
