A vacuum cleaner becomes a briefcase, a cabinet turns into a desk, and an ironing board transforms into an office chair. Transcenders is the graduation project by Japanese-American designer Jun Fujisaku, presented at the Graduation Show 2025 of the Design Academy Eindhoven. It works through overlap: taking domestic objects and hybridising them with office equipment until the two become indistinguishable.

The operation goes beyond appearances. Jun Fujisaku, trained in architecture and working across space and object, uses this series to dismantle the gender roles those objects embody. The broom has always been associated with women, the briefcase with men — bringing them together in a single piece means questioning the post-war domestic models that turned them into separate and opposing symbols.

The material choices are equally precise: pine wood domestic structures open up to reveal industrial aluminium frames. Two aesthetics that don’t cancel each other out, but coexist — much like the roles the project sets out to question.
