Two days in Valtellina, between Val di Mello and San Marco Pass

The Valtellina is a large valley crossed by the river Adda and enclosed in the Alps, a picturesque region whose landscape changes all the time, depending on altitude and along with the seasons, romantic and bitter at the same time.

For those of us living in Milan it’s a place capable of reserving dozens of routes and brief adventures around the corner, a perfect place for a short travel during the weekend. So, with the coming of summer, we decided to rediscover it with the sun, a pair of shorts and our Lumix, during a short weekend of July exploring the Val di Mello and reaching the San Marco Pass. .

Our walk in Val di Mello starts from the parking of San Martino. We follow the signs through the small village and the woods until we reach the val da mèl road, the path that crosses the entire valley.

The summer drew tens of people attracted by its fresh lakes and a lot of climbers who have many opportunity to train on the rock walls.

We back in Morbegno which is already dark.

The second day we decide to go to San Marco Pass. The day is perfect and along the way we encounter swarms of motorcycles chasing each other that accompany us between the hairpins making our climb a little bit bumpy.

Then, finally, the Pass: a large corner to the left with the classic Brown sign, a small kiosk that churns out hot sandwiches and beer stormed by bikers, and right after a road that beats in a steep hill. The view at the top takes the breath away.

The landscapes of Valtellina and of the Bergamo valley lie down on one side and the other, between peaks, pastures and dams. Just below there’s the refuge Cà San Marco, for years the road worker’s house of San Marco Pass and one of the oldest Alpine refuges.

After a lunch full of typical specialities, cheese and sweets, we stop to take the latest pictures with the sky become clouded and the summer that seems to be gone.
