Our interview with skateboarder Yndiara Asp

Born in 1997, Yndiara Asp, Yndi for friends, is a young Brazilian skateboarder and has found the key to her happiness in this sport. Starting from Florianópolis and the skate parks that her city offered, she first achieved excellent results in her native country and then ranked very well in the most renowned international contests.

Yndiara, together with Lizzie Armanto, Brighton Zeuner and Mani Tezuka, was chosen to be the face of the Vanguards campaign of Vans, which in addition to having the goal of making this sport known worldwide, supports the development of skateboarding, trying to raise awareness among men, but especially women of all ages.

At Collater.al, fascinated by personalities like Yndiara’s, we asked her a few questions and she told us about some aspects of her life as a young skater.

Tell us what your training is and how you live the contests and with what mentality do you face the competition?

My “training” is basic to ride my board almost everyday, in different skateparks and spots, having fun and learning new tricks. I like the contests because it gives me the opportunity to travel, meet old and new friends and push myself to get better at skateboarding. I face the competition like a challenge to be the best I can in that moment, connected and present.

Which is the most important teaching that skateboarding has given you?

Persistence, to believe in myself, that I can do anything I want if I really work hard to do it and never give up.

What advice (technical and not only) would you give to someone who would like to approach or simply try skateboarding for the first time?

Go step by step, with the mind confident that you will do it, whatever it is. You don’t have to be good to start something, you have to start something to be good.

When did you discover Vans as a brand and what does it mean for you to be part of the Vanguards campaign?

My first shoes I wore to skate was a vans Sk8-Hi. It means a lot to be part of the Vanguards campaign, I love the way the brand thinks, and the idea of being off the wall, having your own style and doing your own thing.

How does the choice of shoe affect performance and is there a Vans model with which you feel more comfortable and safe?

I think the choice of shoe depends of how you like to feel the board in your feet. I love the sk8-hi, TNT, and Chima pro.

What was your reaction when skateboard was declared an Olympic discipline?

I was surprised at first because I had never imagined it. But I think it’s a really good opportunity to show the world how amazing skateboarding is.
