Absorbed by light is the name of the art project presented by the sculptor Karoline Hinz and British Gali May Lucas, at the Amsterdam Light Festival 2018. The idea is simple and the impact very strong, it seems impossible now to imagine our life without this indispensable object: the smartphone. We forget about everything and everyone, we alienate and we are totally absorbed and addicted. As Gali explains:

“Cycling to work in the mornings, I see people lost in the light of their mobile phones. On park benches, on the tram, in restaurants – no one talks to each other anymore”.

The sculptures talk about me, about you and they do it sitting on a bench, just like the people “absorbed by the light” of the screen. The work responds to the idea of “the medium is the message”, which is the theme of this edition’s festival. The positions of the statues recall the familiar gestures of smartphone users: bent heads, fingers that type and crawl, faces illuminated by reflected light.
