Alessandro Vullo is a Sicilian photographer, born in 1987, who creates beautiful visual stories, intense and authentic. He is interested in real stories, those that you live at night in the premises, those that take place in squats and off-grid realities, those that burn inside.

Us at Collater.al have asked Alessandro a few questions about him and his work:

How did your passion for photography come about?

Photography manifests itself as a necessity. I have always had a very strong emotional bond with the places, people and experiences that have gradually enriched my path, creating an album of images that preserve somehow these moments has always been a sort of mission, to select the “keyframes” of my life. But all these moments, these photographs do not speak only of me: they are interwoven with many other stories, with many other lives. What was a personal need for archiving and expression, was consolidated with maturity in the desire to tell these stories through images.

What do you want to communicate with your images?

My shots are primarily reactions, to everything that strikes me and makes me feel alive. I can put together stories, where I express and celebrate the love for travel, the charm and seduction of the night, the tension between freedom and sacrifice that permeates the reality of the many outsiders that I have photographed over the years. Hoping that those who look at my images will not only get excited but will also ask themselves questions: why should someone want to lead a certain type of life instead of another? How many other ways of dealing with reality are there? What’s outside my comfort zone?

Are there any books, films or songs that inspire your work?

The last project I’m working on, Zero Gravity, has practically developed around a Nine Inch Nails album, The Fragile, and in particular, it’s linked to the track The day the world went away.

In almost all my shots and projects you can still find conceptual or aesthetic references to my favorite authors: Carver and Cortàzar, Xavier Dolan and Danny Boyle to name a few.

Is there a shot you sent us that you are particularly attached to? Why?

Yes, one in particular, in which there is everything: what I feel and what I get back. There is the beauty that can be glimpsed and is not granted completely, there are my will and my desire that come to terms with reality and give life to something fierce and wonderful. There are the night and the passion that clash against a luminous imperturbability. Aesthetics of feelings. A tension, always, that persecutes me a bit but that keeps me alive.

Do you understand what that is?

Is there a dream or a project you would like to realize in the future?

A lot of them, but the most important objective is my idea of tranquillity.

Imagine a place between the hills and the sea, in a warm place. A piece of land where I can build my own house and create a community space project of sharing and living in line with the principles and rhythms of nature.Create a safe place for a healthy community. I don’t think it’s a utopia. I’m not sure how to get there yet, but I know where I want to go. And the photographs, those I will never stop taking.
