It is one of the biggest job resume white lies: “knowledge of Excel.” The truth is that the program developed by Microsoft since 1985 is one of the most complicated and possible of the entire package, and its use in many offices is about basic functions. The possibilities for which Excel can help with work are almost endless, and Ukrainian graphic designer Oleksiy Sai seems to know them very well, so much so that he has created a series of Excel-art works using the very spreadsheet program.

Oleksiy Sai was born and works in Kiev and has chosen to use his computer skills to compose huge tables in which it is not so much the accuracy of the diagrams that is important, but their graphic appearance. The cells and palettes that make up each image are what Excel allows you to compose, which Sai manages to customize according to the subjects represented. This creates a wide variety of silhouettes and details, favored also by the text, which the artist uses to enrich details and best represent the grim, hyper-productive world of offices.
It is precisely the working condition and mental health of workers that Oleksiy Sai addresses in many works. Thus we see offices with sleepless workers hunched over their desks, or moments of despair in front of the photocopier. The industrialization of cities is then another important theme for the artist, who makes views of cities lit up or dominated by smoke from smokestacks.
Sai also recently made a series titled “Bombed,” an Excel-art account of the conflict that is affecting his country.
