The Tarot of Bat for Lashes

Fascination with Tarot cards has united and continues to unite various artists. It was the Surrealists, in particular, who created some of the most astonishing cards. Some of the subjects, like the High Priestess, the Fool, or the Emperor, undergo transformations that reflect the artist’s personal life, or in other cases, they become a means to represent society, its vices, and virtues. How can we not mention Salvador Dalí, who in his deck becomes the Magician and his muse Gala, the Empress? Following in this tradition, today we want to talk to you about a deck created by musician Bat for Lashes – aka Natasha Khan – who has given a highly personal interpretation to the major and minor arcana, changing their names and appearance. Her project, called Motherwitch, is entirely illustrated and conceived by the artist, drawing from her passion for the paranormal.

The most intriguing aspect of Motherwitch is its strong feminine symbolism. Witches, sirens, mothers, and angels become powerful archetypes here, conveying ancestral messages and values. For instance, the “Childhood” card portrays a young girl next to a donkey in a lush jungle, symbolizing a return to innocence and the rediscovery of imagination. «Each card holds meanings, rituals, questions, and creative references, which can be used as desired, whether for guidance or reflection, personal growth, or in conjunction with a creative practice,» reads Natasha’s Instagram profile. «They can serve as a tool to take you on a journey of self-discovery.» Khan’s work draws inspiration from artists like Hilma af Klint and Agnes Martin but also incorporates her instinctive, almost subconscious approach. In this creative process, instinct prevails, with the hand guiding the artist without judgment, leading to a sort of trance-like state.

Bat for Lashes leaves nothing to chance. The Tarot deck is accompanied by a guide that describes each card and suggests rituals related to each, as well as recommending artistic inspirations such as works of art, films or music. For example, the ‘Cosmic Seed’ card promotes connection and conversation and is accompanied by the soundtrack of Kate Bush’s ‘Hello Earth’.
