Since yesterday, June 5, the Rotunda of the Bourse de Commerce in Paris has transformed into a liquid and contemplative space thanks to clinamen, the immersive installation by French artist and musician Céleste Boursier-Mougenot. Curated by Emma Lavigne, director of the Pinault Collection, the project embraces the Parisian summer with a new visual and sound symphony that challenges the conventions of art and music.
In clinamen, sound arises from chance: on an 18-meter-wide pool filled with water and reflecting the Parisian sky, white ceramic bowls float. Driven by an almost imperceptible current, the bowls collide with each other, producing delicate sounds—ephemeral harmonies that seem to emerge from a hidden order. No performer, no score: only matter, space, and vibration.
The title of the work refers to a concept from Epicurean philosophy—“clinamen,” the random swerve of atoms that makes encounters and therefore reality possible. Similarly, the installation is a living, ever-changing system, constantly regenerating through invisible interactions. Each visit is a unique experience, each moment unrepeatable.
The atmospheres of Céleste Boursier-Mougenot
Boursier-Mougenot has turned the sonic transformation of objects into a language. A former theater composer, he has brought music beyond the stage and into the exhibition space, building sensory environments where the viewer is both listener and part of the artwork. His bowls, freed from their original function, become autonomous instruments—playing without being played.
The atmosphere inside the Rotunda is hypnotic—between concentric vibrations and silences that evoke Miró, Rothko, Monet. And yet, as Emma Lavigne emphasizes, there is no pictorial or narrative intent: the aesthetic emerges from the process, and the form is merely the consequence of a deeper dynamic between matter, architecture, and human presence.
In short, clinamen is more than an installation: it is an invitation to slow down, to immerse oneself in listening, and to rediscover, in chance, a form of harmony.
