The Contradictions of Beijing in Chris Yan’s Photographs

Chris Yan is one of those photographers who can move naturally between two worlds: advertising and fine art photography. Through his images, he manages to free himself from the rules of commercial language, finding a personal and intimate way to tell the real.

Over the past ten years, Yan has traveled around the world, but it’s with the project Beijing Story that he returns to his roots, telling the story of the city that shaped him. In his images, Beijing appears as a place of contradictions and temporal collisions, where past and future coexist just a few meters apart. It’s a city in constant transformation, yet it still preserves fragments of an ancient everyday life: the alleys of the hutongs, the repeated gestures of street vendors, the long shadows cast on the red walls of temples.

His gaze alternates between distance and participation, as if trying to reconcile with a place that changes too quickly. In every photograph, one can sense the rhythm of the city – the breath of a metropolis that hosts more than twenty million people, between residents and migrants. Beijing Story thus becomes a visual narrative about memory, identity, and belonging, but also a silent dialogue between tradition and modernity.

With Beijing Story, Chris Yan manages to convey the contradictory soul of his city: a metropolis suspended between the weight of history and the vertigo of the future, observed with the sensitivity of someone who knows all its silences yet continues to rediscover it as if for the first time.
