“City Benches”, here are all the projects

Emanuele D'Angelo

As every year at the London Festival of Architecture young designers and architects have challenged each other for the “City Benches” project.
A design competition for a series of public benches to be installed in Cheapside in the city of London.

Architecture and design students, recent graduates and emerging studies are invited to submit a design proposal for a bench that will transform the street of Cheapside into a place to sit and rest in the midst of the hustle and bustle.

LFA is the world’s largest annual architecture festival. It usually takes place throughout the month of June, but this year it was forced to follow a digital format.
This year, creating new seating in the context of Covid-19’s restrictions was an additional challenge, while allowing for socially distant outdoor space.

Many young designers took part in the competition, but in the end only a few saw their idea become reality on the streets of London. So a pineapple becomes a faceted bench that also serves as a planter, designed by Hugh Diamond, Archie Cantwell and Cameron Clarke. It was handmade by the RARA Workshop trio by combining large pieces of pigmented concrete.

In the Cheapside Sunken Garden, graduate Bartlett Oli Colman has set up two seats in the shape of colorful eyeballs looking up to the sky, called “Look Up”.

The bench made by designer Chim Chim pays homage to Victorian houses in London, with a backrest made of four traditional residential chimneys.

Nearby is The Two-Seater Rule bench, which takes the form of two throne-shaped chairs connected by a two-meter-long bench. According to the artist, a bench designed for long face-to-face, where you can confront each other.

And finally we have “51°30’48.6″ N 0°05’17.9”, the bench of Studio Mxmxm built with laser cut powder coated steel sheets, each representing an axis in the geographical coordinate system.
