At the core the animations and illustrations of Con McHugh there’s almost always a strong idea—told with simplicity and designed to stick. It’s a direct, immediate approach that shuns complexity for its own sake, focusing instead on building images that spark an instant emotional response: often a smile, sometimes a sense of familiarity that’s hard to explain but easy to remember.

2023 marked a turning point with the series of animated posters created for the Bristol Jazz Festival, a project that brings together several of his core passions: music, movement, and character design. Here, animation becomes visual rhythm—a graphic translation of the sound and energy of jazz—expressed through essential yet expressive characters, minimal lines, and a visual narrative that works even within just a few seconds.

Before arriving at such a distinctive visual language, Con worked in brand design—an experience that sharpened his ability to distill complex concepts into clear, intelligent images. It’s precisely there that his obsession with simple but smart ideas took shape: ideas that work instantly and keep resonating in the viewer’s mind even after the animation has ended.

Today he lives in Bristol, a creative and deliberately chaotic city—an environment that seems to perfectly echo his way of working. After studying design at Norwich University of the Arts and illustration at Hochschule Mainz in Germany, Con developed a creative process that blends conceptual thinking with an almost analog approach. His animations are built with light lines, shifting textures, small intentional imperfections, and slightly unstable movements that convey a sense of humanity and nostalgia.

Con McHugh celebrates error and vibration through a mark that is never completely still. It’s precisely this wobbly quality—together with a strong idea at the core of every project—that makes Con McHugh’s animations recognizable and memorable, able to stand out without raising their voice.
