The installation that creates endless variations of iconic video games

It’s called Conway’s Arcade, and it is an installation commissioned by Google that transforms a concept from computational theory into an interactive gaming experience. The project, developed by SpecialGuestX together with SpecialGuest, reinterprets the aesthetic of classic arcade cabinets to show how artificial intelligence and generative systems can translate complex mathematical models into an immediate and accessible language.

The idea stems from cellular automata, systems made of grids of cells that evolve over time following a few local rules. The reference is the famous Game of Life devised by mathematician John Conway, where very simple configurations can generate surprisingly complex behaviors. Conway’s Arcade applies this very logic to gameplay: instead of running fixed, pre-programmed games, the system continuously generates new variations and emergent dynamics.

Built using Gemini 3.0, the platform allows players to create potentially infinite versions of iconic titles such as Space Invaders, Breakout and Flappy Bird. Prompts influence the rules of the simulation and the behavior of the elements on screen, producing different yet still intuitive matches every time. The result is an experience that preserves the familiarity of classic arcade games while introducing a generative and unpredictable dimension.

The cabinet design also reflects this balance between past and future. Made of aluminum and developed through several prototyping cycles, it features joysticks, buttons and typography typical of 1980s arcades, while integrating an adaptive game logic capable of changing in real time during play.

Conway’s Arcade

More than just an arcade, Conway’s Arcade becomes an experimental platform where artificial intelligence, game design and computational theory intersect, turning an abstract mathematical model into a tangible, playable and constantly evolving experience. It is not intended as a commercial product, but rather as an installation that makes AI research tangible through the familiar language of arcade video games.
