With Whispers from Home, photographer Fiifi Abban (whom we previously featured here) does more than simply return home to Cape Coast, Ghana: he repositions himself, crossing an invisible line that had kept him at a distance for years. The project began in 2023 during Fetu Afahye, the annual festival of the Oguaa people, but its roots run deeper.

As a child, Abban experienced the festival from the margins, as many do: too young to stand at the center, close enough to feel its weight. Returning as an adult, camera in hand, changes everything. He is no longer a spectator, but an active presence. He moves within the procession, among bodies, among colors, inside the rhythm. Photography becomes the means to renegotiate the distance between himself and his origins.

The images speak of an identity that is never individual. Coordinated fabrics, ritual postures, synchronized movements build a collective aesthetic in which the individual exists only within the group. Identity is worn, staged, shared. It is pride, but also visual discipline. It is tradition, filtered through a contemporary awareness of the image.

Abban does not seek the exotic or the picturesque. He does not photograph “culture” as something to be displayed for outsiders. Instead, he questions what it means to belong after having been away. His photographs are crossed by a subtle tension: between memory and presence, between what was remembered and what is rediscovered by stepping into the heart of the celebration.

Whispers from Home is an open-ended series, destined to evolve with the artist’s periodic returns. And this continuity is part of the project itself. It is not a work that ends with a single journey, but a dialogue renewed each time Fiifi Abban decides to set foot back home.
