Fotograf is a film directed by Irena Pavlásková on the famous photographer Jan Saudek. The Czech artist’s life was actually ruined by persecutions since he was a child. Born in 1935 from a Jewish family, all of them were deported by the Nazis and he grew up in a children’s center with his twin brother Karel. After WW2 he approached painting and in a few years, his art evolved to photography. His style is unique as he shot black and white photographs in a studio before using watercolors to finish them. Another important aspect of his work is the study of the human body: he represents men but especially women in a surrealistic way, with a particular attention for their sexual parts. Fotograf in fact, thanks to Irena Pavlásková’s professional and creative eyes focuses on the relationship between Saudek (interpreted by Karl Roden) and the large number of women that characterizing his life and work.
Fotograf is being released in cinemas on the 28th of June, with three years after its Czech distribution.
