If you happen to visit the website or Instagram profile of Ini Ceramique, you might think you’ve stumbled upon the page of a minimalist illustrator. It takes a moment to realize that what you’re looking at are decorative home objects—sometimes even functional ones—that simply simulate a 2D appearance.
So, not lines on white paper, but dark brushstrokes on ceramic or stoneware pieces fired at high temperatures.
The entire production of Ini Ceramique, an artisanal ceramics studio based in Burgundy and founded by designer Inhee Ma, is defined by this minimalist style. Inhee plays with our perception, crafting handmade pieces that resemble black-and-white drawings. Recently, she has focused on a collection titled “Still Life”, featuring 10 different objects. Some, like the apple, pear, or croissant, are purely decorative, while others, like the clock, bottle, or vase, have practical uses.
A distinctive feature shared by all these objects is the material: each is made of chamotte stoneware and fired at high temperatures. This process makes the interiors glossy while giving the exteriors a rough texture that highlights their natural finish.
