The artist Ronald Van Der Meijs has created a unique installation in the Japanese garden of Amsterdam’s Amstelpark.
Entitled “Odoshi Cloud Sequence,” the Dutch artist used eight units that fill slowly, then the pipes fall down and create a splash of water. This movement hits a vibraphone button whose tone slowly turns off.

In this unpredictable composition of sound and movement, each unit has a slow, independent rhythm due to the fact that each water pump is connected to its own solar panel. The rhythms of each unit are individually influenced by wind and clouds blocking the sun and thus affecting the composition and total intensity.

This work of sound art is a symbiosis between nature and culture and explores new possibilities of generating sounds and compositions controlled by slow, unpredictable, and unexpected elements of nature, highly respected in Japanese culture.

The diversity of natural sounds gives the work an almost meditative character, while the dependence on natural factors evokes a tension between desire and acceptance. This sound installation engages, like a natural sequencer, in a dialogue with water, sun wind, and clouds.
