John Kayacan‘s photographic research into the world of combat sports began in college and resulted in the Knockout photo project. In his colour shots, the Los Angeles-born photographer seeks to highlight an intrinsic aspect of the boxing epic, such as the discipline and dedication that athletes must respect in order to compete in a tough sport that requires perfect physical preparation.
It is interesting for Kayacan to tackle the subject of sports, particularly combat sports, because of the energy that is released in the fights, even the dramatic ones of wrestling, another sport that the artist has photographed closely.

John Kayacan’s camera goes inside the ring, getting right to the heart of the fights, among athletes with faces deformed by fatigue or hidden by a coloured mask. The photographic narrative in the two series becomes a sort of short film inside the ring, an electric and scary place, capable of arousing contrasting feelings of fear and fascination.
I specialize in both documentary/street photography, after studying at the California Institute of the Arts, Kayacan uses photography to portray the world around him, which includes boxing, a physical act of resistance and perseverance, theatricality and inevitable defeat.
