JR is working on a project that will transform the Pont Neuf in Paris into a monumental sculpture using over forty thousand square meters of fabric. Arches, parapets, and lampposts will disappear beneath a textile skin that will alter our perception of the bridge as we know it. The tribute to The Pont Neuf Wrapped (1985) by Christo and Jeanne-Claude is clear, and JR makes it explicit in his intention to honor the legacy of the artistic duo.

The project is titled La Caverne du Pont Neuf and will open on June 6, 2026. Intervening on the bridge is JR, an artist who has built his practice at the intersection of photography, architecture, and public space, transforming monuments into collective devices. From making the Louvre pyramid “disappear” through an optical illusion to covering the Duomo of Naples with the faces of its citizens, JR has consistently worked on the boundary between visibility and urban imagination.

With La Caverne du Pont Neuf, the gesture becomes immersive. The title evokes Plato’s cave: a place of perception and revelation, understood as a symbolic space where what we see does not necessarily coincide with truth, but can become the starting point for an awakening or a revelation. The bridge will not only be wrapped in an inflatable structure, but also traversable as an environment. The fabric will soften the stone, filter the light, and alter the way one moves through space. From a simple piece of infrastructure, the Pont Neuf will become an experience, completed by a sound component curated by Thomas Bangalter.

Rather than competing with the legacy of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, JR seems to establish a generational dialogue. If in 1985 the intervention emphasized the surface, here the focus shifts to the interior, to the act of passing through, to what happens inside.
