A year later, world-renowned street artist JR returns to Milan with a new public work. Last year it was the Inside Out project that surprised the city, covering part of the facade of the Arengario in Piazza Duomo with hundreds of photographs that the artist had taken years earlier of workers at the BASE construction site. This time, in the context of Milan Art Week, JR is presenting to the public one of his illusory works – more properly called sculptural anamorphoses – in one of the city’s focal points, the Central Station, precisely in Piazza Duca d’Aosta.

Today, April 9th, the city of Milan woke up to a new public work by JR, entitled The Birth. The work consists of iron scaffolding and cardboard boards that collectively create the final composition. Fascist architecture does not just serve as a backdrop but becomes an integral part of the installation. In fact, the work should be viewed from a few meters away, preferably from across the street. From here it is clear that what JR wants to represent is a crack inside the station, a sort of cavern that acts as a time portal. The same operation the artist did in September 2023 with the work Retour à la Caverne installed in Paris in front of the facade of the Opéra Garnier.
