About a month ago, we told you about Martin Margiela‘s upcoming debut in the art world.
On Wednesday evening, the exhibition curated by the Belgian designer and artist finally opened at the Lafayette Anticipations foundation in Paris.

More than 20 artworks that explore some of the designer’s obsessions that he exorcised through his collections at the time: the passage of time that creates and destroys, hair and wigs – Martin grew up in a family of hairdressers and his childhood was spent in the family salons – silences, aging and worldliness, from which he has always escaped.
An almost irrational exhibition that reflects the theme of obsession. A labyrinth-like arrangement where absence dominates, where the public enters through a hidden back door and is catapulted directly into the torments of the artist/designer. So many of the artworks on display are hidden by random covers or curtains that are removed totally at random by the foundation’s staff.
“It’s a form of metaphor, an analogy of the idea of an existential quest, the meaning of life”, Rebecca Lamarche-Vadel, director of the gallery, said.
A cathartic attempt to dig into the empty chapters of our lives. In fact, the exhibition has no title in order to accentuate this catharsis and leave the viewer with the greatest freedom of interpretation.
An anthropomorphic bus stops, huge tarpaulins with trompe l’oeil prints, five spheres like heads characterized by 5 different shades of hair to symbolize the inexorable passage of time and the effects it has on the human body, these are some of the works created by Martin Margiela for his first solo exhibition ever.
As per established practice over many years in the fashion world, the Belgian designer was not present at the opening and did not give interviews. Even in this “new” career as an artist, Margiela remains anonymous.
Martin Margiela’s first art exhibition in Paris will remain open to the public until January 2, after which a world tour is scheduled to begin most likely in China.
To see it in Europe we would have to wait presumably for the middle of 2022.
