After last year’s Met Gala on the theme of “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic”, we never thought there would be anything more exaggerated, but it seems that the 2019 one will be. Actors, models, designers, and exponents of the world of the jet set will gather on May 6 on the stairs of the Metropolitan Museum in New York to show off clothes and suits following the theme “Camp: Notes on Fashion”. In this case, the term camp refers to the unscrupulous and conscious use of kitsch in the art world. At the head of the most anticipated event of the year will be Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, Serena Williams, Anna Wintour, and Alessandro Michele.
The theme is inspired by the essay “Notes on Camp” published in 1964 by cultural critic Susan Sontag. Susan was the first to examine the subject and analyze kitsch within the occidental culture, opening the way to many other researchers.
“Indeed the essence of camp is its love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.”
Three days after the Gala, the exhibition on the same theme will also open at the MET. From May 9 to September 8, 2019, about 175 objects will be on display to retrace the history of the camp. It will start from its origins to get to the present day, exploring how irony, humor, parody, and exaggeration have become part of the world of fashion.
Among the designers whose works will be present are Marc Jacobs, Jean Paul Gaultier, John Galliano, Franco Moschino, Miuccia Prada, Elsa Schiaparelli, Vivienne Westwood, Gianni, and Donatella Versace and of course Alessandro Michele. I say, of course, why the exhibition’s sponsor will be Gucci. After all, there couldn’t have been a better choice, since the fundamental characteristic of Michele’s brand is its ability to combine art and pop culture.
