Mid90s, the first movie directed by the actor Jonah Hill

Renown Jonah Hill has just started directing movies with truly interesting results. This actor got to celebrity acting in demented comedies such as Suxbad and The 40 Year-Old Virgin and In little time raised himself amongst cinema’s greats by brilliantly interpreting the co-protagonist role in Wolf of Wall Street which got him to an Academy nomination.

Mid90s takes place in Los Angeles in such time-frame. It’s the story, shot in super8, of a boy who starts hanging out in a skater community to evade his complicated family dynamics. It appears to be a quite trivial plot as Hill opts for social and aesthetic investigation by narrating the Los Angeles’ skaters sub-culture.

The director is indeed proceeding from Larry Clark‘s Kids, movie which is based on a similar story taking place in New York in 1995 and from Shane Meadows’ other cult movie This is England which analyses the British skinhead culture of 1983. There educated and ambitious inspirations are hopeful. Moreover, our novice director has always been a fan of the skating culture especially if we remember his advertising cooperation with Palace.

The mid90s cast is composed by Shane Meadows (who has recently acted in the killing of the holy deer in the leading role) as well as Katherine Waterson and Lucas Hedges.

The release date is scheduled for the 19th of October in US cinemas.
