NUTRIR LA ESTIMA, Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada’s lastest work

Federica Cimorelli

In Spain, in the fields of the municipality of Estopiñán del Castillo in the community of Aragon, Cuban artist Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada has just completed his latest artwork. The project, entitled NUTRIR LA ESTIMA, pays tribute to the daily work of the Fundación Crisálida, a voluntary association set up in 2008 and active throughout the country, which in Estopiñán del Castillo accompanies the disabled in their social and professional integration.

The artwork, created on a wheat field in three stages, represents two hands meeting. They are those of a child and an adult and symbolise the power of collaboration, support, the balance of giving and taking and the potential of all that we can manifest through the action of work.

The people of Fundación Crisálida in fact work together in a local bakery, baking bread, cakes, cupcakes, croissants and biscuits for the citizens of the area and the region. The hands thus become the tools that facilitate and sustain life and celebrate the importance of the value of horizontal relationships.

It is no coincidence that NUTRIR LA ESTIMA uses soil materials to take shape. Grain, soil and compost colour the surface and change their appearance as the months and seasons go by. From April to October 2021, the work will go through a process of metamorphosis, transforming itself more and more and generating a real reward for the community.
