Just over a week ago Bong Joon-ho took the stage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles to retire four statuettes thanks to Parasite, the film event that not only entered the history of cinema, becoming the first South Korean film not only to be nominated for an Oscar but also to win in the category Best International Feature Film and also Best Film, beating Sam Mendes’ favorite 1917, has thrilled audiences around the world.
The story of the Kim family and the Park family literally captivated us, leading many of us to overcome an obstacle that seemed insurmountable, that of language, because what we saw on screen, the one created by Bong Joon-ho, is the universal language of cinema, based on the power of the image.
But it seems that the world is not yet ready to say goodbye to such a story, which is why HBO has acquired the film rights to make a miniseries.
According to some rumors, the idea of making a television adaptation of the Oscar-winning film was already on the program before the Academy Awards ceremony, but surely the prize money gave a big boost to the negotiations.
Obviously there is no release date yet, but we have some certain news not to be underestimated. First of all, it will be neither a remake nor a sequel, it seems that the plot of the series will focus on all those aspects that the reduced time of the film has not allowed to deepen. Surprisingly, a director’s name is also missing, while Bong Joon-ho’s name appears with Adam McKay among the executive producers.
The first rumors about the cast have also been revealed: although never linked to a particular character, in the last few days the name of Mark Ruffalo has been mentioned, while the presence of Tilda Swinton is more certain. We remember working with the South Korean director both in 2013 for Snowpiercer and in 2017 for Okja.
Given the success of the film, but also the latest miniseries produced by HBO including Big Little Lies and Chernobyl, we can only expect a masterpiece. To find out if Parasite the series will live up to expectations, we just have to wait.
