Sella Concept created the Piraña, a retro-inspired bar, and restaurant located in the Balham area of London, avoiding the usual South American clichés. The headquarters are owned by brothers Alastair and Nicholas Heathcote, who in the last five years have set up numerous successful businesses in the British capital.

To avoid usual color combinations of soft colors linked to the South American tradition, the studio founders Tatjana Von Stein and Gayle Noonan opted for bright and decisive colors, such as bright red and bright blue. The seats have a style reminiscent of a restaurant of the 50s.

“We are both fascinated by the psychology of behaviour behind design and the question of how to encourage behaviour through layout, design and materials, what design makes us feel. Our favourite projects are those that allow us to answer one question: how can we transport an audience? The design concept began by developing an understanding of how people will use the overall space, incorporating visual shifts and atmospheric transitions to accommodate changing behaviours within the venue”.

Each environment has a different personality, but consistent with the entire project, it seems that Piraña was created with the intent to make a leap into the past to escape from city stressful reality. The design and geometries of furnishings have been expertly studied, nothing is left to chance in this place:

“Apart from the chairs and lights, every fixture and item of furniture in Piraña has been custom-designed for the space by Sella Concept, including the booths, bar, banquette, tables, stools, floors and bathroom sinks”.

Even the menu, business cards, and the website have been released by Sella Concept, to guarantee their visual-planning coherence. The London-based studio has recently completed several projects, including De Beauvoir Block creative center, Mediterranean-style Pimlico’s Omar’s Place restaurant, and Hackney’s Pink Night Tales bar.
