The interdisciplinary artist Suzanne Jongmans has made two series of works, “Mind over matter” and “Kindred spirits”, where she recycles the packaging materials to create elaborate Renaissance costumes. Polystyrene, plastic sheets and envelopes take on new life in the series of photographs proposed by the artist who, once these costumes have been completed, proposes on subjects in poses reminiscent of the portrayed styles from fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
The artist describes his work as follows:
“The use of the residual material is a reaction to the present and the mass consumption that surrounds us; most people throw away foam rubber, but as a child, I see a diamond in the rough”.
The images recall the works of the Flemish masters like Jan Van Eyck and Robert Campin, but in a reflective and modern key on the mass disposal of materials, in stark contrast to an era in which the clothes lasted much longer than for a single season. And what do you think?
