Simon Kerola is a Swedish photographer we had the pleasure of talking about earlier here. His images are strongly aesthetic and evoke very special atmospheres, unique in their kind.
Us at Collater.al have asked Simon a few questions about him and his work:
Your shots are very aesthetic, what inspires you?
I often spend a lot of time finding my imagination in emotions. I love looking at sceneries combining it with various music to find different emotional themes that could fit. A sort of ’’what could’ve happened here’’ scenario.
As long as I find myself in a space that let me have complete creative freedom I feel inspired, something I strive to have in my everyday surroundings.
Your research deals with themes such as melancholy, what message do you want to communicate to the public?
I think there is a message, but I haven’t quite figured out what it is yet. I spend a lot of time to search for the right kind of emotion that I want to transmit through my work.
It’s all very personal and a self-therapeutic way of expression. If I can make you feel something I am satisfied. Not sure if I want to be able to control these things though.
What is the image, among those that you have produced, which represents you the most?
Without a doubt my latest photograph Mirage. I love the momentum of which some photographs are taken. It’s like you know looking through the lens that this is going to change you. I can’t describe how beautiful it was when I took this photo. After I finished it, I just felt at ease in a way I haven’t done in a long time.
The composition of your shots is very “cinematic”, there are movies or books that have influenced your creativity? If so, which ones?
I used to edit a lot of videos when I was younger and I believe that was when I first taught myself to get this cinematic feeling. But other than that Bud Spencer & Terrance Hill films are always gonna be a classic close to heart.
What are your plans for the future?
I would like to find representation. I haven’t been ready for it until now.
