In response to the Bruges Triennal‘s 2018 theme Liquid City, the architecture and design firm StudioKCA and the Hawaii Wildlife Fund have created Skyscraper, an enormous sculpture of a whale made only of plastic coming from the oceans.

The studio, founded and directed by Jason Klimoski and Lesley Chang, wanted to show how cities around the world are working to help dispose of the waste that is killing our oceans. The non-profit organization HWF, which is dedicated to the care and maintenance of the Hawaiian marine fauna, coordinated the collection on the beaches of most of the waste used for the sculpture.

The final result is a whale built entirely with almost five tons of blue and white plastic pieces, 38-foot-tall, leaping out of the water from one of Bruges’ main canals and arching over historic Jan Van Eyck Square.
