If summer energy is starting to wane and a return to routine seems just around the corner, September is the ideal month to find new stimulation. Some consider it the start of a new year, and the atmosphere of rebirth it brings seems to be the perfect time to discover cultural events, exhibitions and some new things not to be missed even at the cinema. This month also offers a few surprises and special events not to be missed, perfect for prolonging that sense of summer escapism that has accompanied us so far.

ART & PHOTOGRAPHY | EXHIBITIONS AND FESTIVALS

#1 PhMuseum Days International Festival of Photography 12-15 September | Bologna

The PhMuseum Days are back for their fourth edition and the theme chosen is CLOSER: we live in an age in which it is not possible to imagine any objective detachment between us and reality. Observation itself touches and changes things, every story is contamination. The works on show do not try to achieve an impossible neutrality, but accept the partiality that comes from looking closely. They make intimacy their strength: in interpersonal relationships as much as in the relationship with the territory, with history, and with living beings. An invitation to share and to observe carefully, beyond prejudices and stereotypes.

#2 Non pensare all’elefante rosa, Traffic Gallery from September 21st | Bergamo

At the Traffic Gallery in Bergamo, Non pensare all’elefante rosa (Don’t think about the pink elephant) will open, a bipersonal exhibition by Hyun Cho and Giulio Zanet, curated by Sara Parolini with the artistic direction of Giorgia Massari, in collaboration with Galleria Ramo in Como. During the opening on Saturday 21 September, there will be a long performance by Valerio Eliogabalo Torrisi with a text by Salvatore Cristofaro.

#3 Landscape’s Body, Antonio Colombo Gallery from September 19th | Milan

From 19 September, Landscape’s Body curated by Ivan Quaroni will open at Antonio Colombo Gallery in Milan. The solo exhibition of Iryina Maksymova, a Ukrainian artist known for her unique (and colourful) style that transforms personal experiences into art.

#6 Bintou Dembélé. En mode marron, Palazzo Grassi Sept 27 – 28 | Venice

Palazzo Grassi presents the return to the stage of choreographer and performer Bintou Dembélé, a pioneer of French hip hop, with an original and unprecedented performance that draws on ritual.

#7 Naturalis Historia, BUILDING from September 10th | Milan

BUILDING in Milan presents Naturalis Historia, the two-person exhibition of artists Linda Carrara and Mikayel Ohanjanyan open until 12 October 2024. The exhibition hosts a selection of both sculptural and pictorial works, proposing an unprecedented comparison between their different artistic researches investigating the common theme of nature.

#8 From Planet to Plate, Quello che il piatto non dice Yeast Photo Festival from 19th September | Matino e Salento

The third edition of the Yeast Photo Festival will host 15 projects, several of which are on show in Italy for the first time, and will be the protagonists of the edition entitled From Planet to Plate, which will be held in Matino and Salento, from 19 September to 3 November.

FESTIVAL & MUSIC

#1 Le Cannibale at Castello Sforzesco, 1 September from 8PM | Milan

Within the walls of Castello Sforzesco, Le Cannibale will host a djset by Venerus and Hiroko Hacci. Sunday 1 September from 20.00 to 00.00. Also not to be missed is the Closing Party on Saturday 14 September, Le Cannibale’s last party in the wonderful setting of the Ex Macello with music by DJs Lamusa II, Zoetrope and free admission.

#2 Padma Festival, September 7-8 ARCA | Milan

The Padma Festival is preparing to welcome nature, travel and balance enthusiasts to a unique, immersive event to be held in Milan at ARCA on 7 and 8 September 2024. An unmissable opportunity to enjoy a multi-sensory experience that celebrates connection with nature and inner balance.

#3 Buka, daytime party under the Ponte di Rubattino from 3PM to 1AM Sept 7th | Milan

Buka starts after lunch with the ethnofolk and psychedelic research of Psychophono, then Nema from Bologna, Mintsound’s senior digger, leads us with his slow and acidic four-quarter, at 7 pm Paranoid London, the cult duo of English acid, who return to Buka after 7 years fresh with a new album. The finale is with Brillante and his proggy, ecstatic techno.

#4 ECHO Festival | Sept 8th from 2PM to 11.30PM at Cascina Cotica | Milan

ECHO is a boutique festival based in Milan. Its mission is to offer a space where you can take your time and be simple human beings within your own ecosystem. Live music, six artists and two stages surrounded by greenery together with a talk on mental sustainability and a clay workshop. To end the summer well and return to work with a truly authentic serenity. Plus, the approach is circular and sustainable. To keep an eye on.

Bring no Clothes: Bloomsbury and the Philosophy of Fashion by Charlie Porter

With the arrival of fashion month, we do not want to talk about events but recommend reading. On 7 September Bring no Clothes: Bloomsbury and the Philosophy of Fashion by Charlie Porter (also author of What Artists Wear) will be released.

In Bring No Clothes, six members of the Bloomsbury Group-the collective of creatives and thinkers who were at the forefront of a social and sartorial revolution-offer new perspectives on the constraints and possibilities of fashion, from the stifling repression of E. M. Forster’s top buttons to the creativity of Vanessa Bell’s rebellious hems. Forster to the creativity of Vanessa Bell’s rebellious hemlines; from the sheer pleasure of Ottoline Morrell’s sumptuous gowns to the conflicted awareness of Virginia Woolf’s orange stockings; from Duncan Grant’s liberating play with nudity to John Maynard Keynes’s power play with the traditional dress. As Porter closely examines what they wore and how they wore it, we see how clothing can be a means of creative, intellectual and sexual liberation or, conversely, an instrument of patriarchal control.

Lake Como Design Festival, September 15-22 | Como

The Lake Como Design Festival returns with its sixth edition. The programme of events with a series of exhibitions and special events in Como and around its lake. This year the theme is lightness, the leitmotif of this new event that accompanies the visitor along a diffuse path to be discovered.

EXTRA

Ricci Weekender, Septmeber 5-8 | Catania

Taking place in Catania from 5 to 8 September, the Ricci Weekender opens its sixth edition celebrating music and the best contemporary cuisine. In collaboration between MercatiGenerali and London-based Worldwide FM radio, founded by DJ and producer Gilles Peterson, and British chef Ed Wilson.
