Afterimage, the new online platform launched by Spazio Maiocchi and Kaleidoscope, has recently launched a retrospective on the works of Japanese experimental director, film theorist, and video artist Toshio Matsumoto (1932-2017).

Matsumoto, who coined the term “neo-documentarism” in the 1960s, has produced numerous radical and provocative short and feature-length films during his career.

The protagonists of this monographic focus are 9 films shot between 1969 and 1987, able to show a complete overview of the director’s work among avant-garde documentaries, visionary shorts, and award-winning feature films that have found their success thanks to the constant aesthetic experimentation always in contrast with the tradition and pop culture.

The 9 films will be available until September 11 on Afterimage.
