Richard Gasquet is nearing retirement, and Le Coq Sportif — the historic French sportswear brand — has decided to bid him farewell with a particularly symbolic release: a Varsity Jacket made entirely in France, in an extremely limited edition of just 11 numbered and autographed pieces.

The Varsity Jacket that Tells the Story of Richard Gasquet’s Career

This project, which blends heritage with personal storytelling, is a tribute to a long and consistent career. Every detail of the jacket is designed to offer a visual summary of Gasquet’s tennis journey: the number 23 for the years spent on the professional circuit, an hourglass symbolizing the 956 weeks he remained in the ATP Top 100 (no other French player has done so), the 16 titles he won, his debut at age 15, and the 2017 Davis Cup. There are also more intimate details: his initials, the silhouette of his iconic one-handed backhand (a cult favorite among fans), and a lining that references the most iconic kits he wore throughout his career.

The piece was unveiled in an unusual setting for tennis, but one that aligns with the brand’s identity: the Paris Opera House, a symbolic place of craftsmanship and French elegance. The entire production chain is traceable — design, embroidery, knitwear, and tailoring were all entrusted to French ateliers, reaffirming the artisanal approach that Le Coq Sportif has championed for years.

With this Varsity Jacket, the brand not only celebrates the athlete but also positions itself at the intersection of sport and culture, where the product becomes a story, and the story becomes a collectible object. The release is scheduled for these days, during Roland-Garros — which will be Gasquet’s last. The timing, of course, is no coincidence.
