Chinese photographer Wang Yishu was a photojournalist, before turning his gaze to the stories that the media were less interested in telling. His photographs portray seemingly trivial moments and common events that through their look are extreme and turn out to be fantastic, sometimes almost grotesque. As he himself states:

“I like photos of reality, but free from reality”

Thanks to the de-contextualization Wang offers a non-linear reading of events, so each image becomes a new story, which the viewer must have fun to imagine.

In fact, at the compositional level, the cut of each scene is pushed to the maximum, to obtain an abstract effect that makes each photo a sort of little mystery to solve. His characters become part of a new story, entirely determined by the viewer.
