The Simpsons is one of the most famous sitcom in the world, a product of the American cultural industry and part of modern popular culture. Watching them on TV is an opportunity to disconnect, enjoy 20 minutes of entertainment and observe other people’s lives with sarcasm and irony.
This sitcom, besides being famous for its national and international success, is best known for the references and quotations it contains, which for the most passionate viewers are the programme’s most precious jewel. Books, films, songs, television programmes or other products of popular culture are in fact scattered directly or indirectly throughout each episode and spice up each drawing with what is known as an “easter egg”.
Being able to catch every reference is an almost impossible challenge, but many people like to put themselves to the test. Carmen López for example is part of the group because in 2017 she inaugurated a personal project dedicated to just that. It’s called Simpsons Library and it’s an Instagram profile that collects all the books, magazines and editorial publications that appear in the programme.
Although few people notice, the newspapers and printed products featured in the program are very numerous and do not only concern the protagonists. Held in the hands of the most famous characters, by stand-ins in passing or simply present in the background of the scene, these objects show funny and absurd titles, references to real or simply invented works.
Simpsons Library doesn’t exactly collect them all, but it certainly has a great archive. Check out a selection here and follow the profile on Instagram to make sure you don’t miss the next ones.
