There are over 115,500 post boxes on the streets of the UK, all in that unmistakable bright red and all in the same shape. It’s the Royal Mail, the UK’s largest postal company, that controls the design of the letterboxes, which is rarely changed. British artist Alex Chinneck, whom we talked about in occasion of his installation for Milan Design Week, succeeded in the almost impossible task of literally distorting some “post boxes” with the Alphabetti Spaghetti project.
In practice, the artist has created post boxes that twist around themselves.
All of them are located in places carefully chosen by the artist, places that are of significant importance for Alex Chinneck’s career. The first sculpture is in London, where Alex made his first public work of art in 2012, the second is in Margate, Kent and the last in Tinsley, Sheffield. Unfortunately, the latter was dismantled yesterday, September 29, but fortunately, the London one will remain permanently in Caxton Street and the one in Margate will be visible until January 12, 2020.
