Shengyun Mao, aka AMAO, is a multifaceted artist based in Shanghai. Her work ranges from illustration to motion design, as well as making VR works. Her training took place in Japan, where she studied as a motion designer; back in China, AMAO founded MOU her design studio, focusing on illustration, motion design and art direction. Her style is colorful and fun. Her illustrations and animations look at reality, capturing the essence of contemporaneity with a voyeuristic gaze, but always with a touch of fantasy and liveliness that sets her apart. In particular, it is the living environment that inspires her, think of Shanghai Moments, a VR animated short film made by AMAO in 2020. A short film that takes the viewer to discover the city, among the old streets of Shanghai, through the protagonist’s point of view. It is interesting how the real is continuously intertwined with the dream world, on the one hand the reality, on the other the more surreal aspect. All this leads the viewer to ask “who is really controlling the real world and the dream world?

Looking at AMAO’s illustrations and animations, it is evident that the themes he most often addresses are love and loneliness. His intention is to invite viewers to contemplate the complexities of human emotions intertwined with the ever-changing urban landscape.
