We discovered—almost by chance, through Indie Wire‘s Facebook profile—that the biopic dedicated to the life of Jean-Michel Basquiat, titled Basquiat, has been restored and will be screened starting tomorrow, September 13, at the IFC Center in New York and the Laemmle Noho in Los Angeles. Who knows how long we’ll have to wait to see the restored version in Italy, but what better opportunity to rediscover this masterpiece? For those unfamiliar with the project, this film, directed by Julian Schnabel in 1996 (who also directed Van Gogh: At Eternity’s Gate), features Jeffrey Wright—recently seen in American Fiction—in the role of the american artist. The cast also includes David Bowie as Andy Warhol, Benicio del Toro as Benny Dalmau, and many others who would later become major figures in cinema. Among them is Willem Dafoe, who plays an electrician. Basquiat follows the protagonist throughout his career, from his early days to the sudden fame that brought with it the challenges of dealing with addiction and defining his identity.
