Milan is preparing to host BIG, the first edition of the International Graphics Biennial. Specifically, the dedicated days will be from May 23 to 26, 2024, during which Milan will become the center of communication design and visual cultures. It is a widespread festival, conceived and curated by Francesco Dondina and sponsored by the City of Milan, supported by important associations such as Aiap, Agi, ADCI and AIS Design. In fact, BIG’s roots are well established. In fact, the idea stems from the experience of the Milano Graphic Festival 2022, from here BIG continues in that wake by proposing itself as a new format on a biennial basis, targeting an international audience. Between exhibitions, installations, talks, events and free social projects, the festival will come to life mainly in the Milano Certosa District, an area that has already demonstrated a strong connection with the world of graphic design.

A festival that involves the entire city, and beyond

The ADI Design Museum will be one of the beating hearts of the event, but the entire event will spread throughout the city thanks to partnerships with museums, galleries, schools, universities, archives and graphic design studios. A significant new development is the partnership with Graphic Days® Torino, which will extend the festival’s influence beyond Milan’s borders.

Guests and themes

BIG’s program will feature many Italian and international guests. These include names such as Franco Achilli, Silvana Amato, Luca Barcellona (we interviewed him in Spigola, the podcast), Jonathan Barnbrook and many others. The events will be aimed at professionals, students and enthusiasts, offering moments of insight and research on topics such as urban redevelopment, the environment, gender identity and education. Special attention will be paid to the city, youth and sustainability.

The heart of the event is Milano Certosa District

The Milano Certosa District, undergoing a transformation thanks to an urban regeneration project, will be the nerve center of BIG. Talks and workshops with experts in the field will be held here, exploring topics ranging from the iconography of international design to the creative use of Mediterranean waste to the marriage of music and graphics.

Evening events

BIG’s days will not end at sunset: evening events will enliven the city, prolonging the festival experience and creating additional opportunities for meeting and exchange. BIG is not just a graphics festival, but a platform for dialogue, discovery and innovation, aiming to make Milan the hub of international visual culture. All that remains is to mark the dates in your diary and get ready to experience four days of creativity and design. THE ENTIRE PROGRAM CAN BE FOUND HERE.
