A project born on Instagram that blends political satire, communist imagery, and pop nostalgia, transforming one of the purest figures in Italian culture into a revolutionary icon.
Altan, awarded in 2023 with the Bonelli Award at Cartoons on the Bay, has always given Pimpa a curious dimension and a clear, transparent language — accessible to children yet never simplistic. His comics capture the wonder of everyday life and the ability to see the world with fresh eyes. But in Comrade Pimpa, that same curiosity becomes class consciousness: an ironic and political lens through which to read the present.
«The concept of Compagna Pimpa didn’t appear out of nowhere,» the admin (or admins?) of the account, who prefer to remain anonymous, tell us. «It was already in the air — in memes, in forums, even on Pimpa’s official profile. We just decided to give it its own space.» And indeed, the idea works precisely because of its paradox. A character representing childhood, simplicity, and the absence of ideology is placed at the center of a deeply political conversation. The result is a kind of illustrated utopia — a comic socialism built from contradictions and memes.
Behind the project there’s no empty irony, but a desire to open a reflection on our time. The creators are clear: «We believe that the communist revolution is not only still possible, but necessary. We’re living at the peak of the system’s contradictions, and right now it’s crucial to imagine an alternative.» A radical message, yes — but filtered through the lightheartedness of a character that belongs to everyone. Pimpa thus becomes a way to talk about social injustice, capitalism, and inequality without ever losing her smile.
Scrolling through Compagna Pimpa’s feed, you find a Pimpa quoting Marx, marching with a red flag, reflecting on labor, and firmly standing against the state of Israel. Images that make you laugh and think — as if Altan’s innocent universe had suddenly been stained by reality. «Pimpa is the antithesis of traditional politics,» they say. «She’s clear, direct, free of superstructures. And perhaps for that very reason, she can say things others can’t.»
At a time when political communication is often held hostage by complexity — by calculated slogans and opaque language — Compagna Pimpa chooses simplicity as an act of rebellion. Its tone is transversal, direct, built to cut through the algorithm and reach those who normally don’t care about ideology. «We live in a world oversaturated with information,» they explain. «We believe that the most revolutionary thing today is to simplify — to get straight to the point.»
And it’s precisely here that Pimpa becomes herself again: curious, optimistic, unable to accept injustice as normal.
