Ellen Stewart presents At The Beach at the Fotografia Calabria Festival, a long-term (for now incomplete) photographic series that addresses the theme of the beach as a place of revelation of social dynamics. Through a combination of daily shots, portraits, and still lifes, Stewart captures the beach as a true microcosm of human experience, a space where personal identity mingles with social observation, and which she calls beachology.

The series delves into feminine, summer themes, into worldly matters, surveying fragmented glimpses of bodies. What it offers is an intimate and peculiar perspective on these subjects. The photographs, therefore, do not merely document but invite viewers to reflect on the dynamics underlying the seemingly simple moments of beach life.

One of the central themes that Stewart explores is the tension and relationship between control, character, and femininity. The beach thus becomes the stage where these dynamics are both exaggerated and brought to light. Stewart portrays men through the open legs of women in swimsuits or captures a woman’s legs from below, pushing the boundaries of relational dynamics. At The Beach by Ellen Stewart is a project that invites viewers to look beyond the surface, to discover the hidden stories behind each shot, and to reflect on the subtle nuances behind human dynamics by focusing on the simple yet powerful setting of the beach.
