It’s over, we knew it would happen, but we weren’t ready. On Sunday night, as always in conjunction with the United States, “The Iron Throne“, the last installment of Game of Thrones, the grand finale, the one we were waiting for and that we would never have liked to have arrived, was aired.
The event series that rewrote the history of the small screen gathered the last applause, and also the inevitable criticism, and closed the curtain, but it seems right to retrace these last 79 minutes conclusive.
The Opening Credits
The destruction that Daenerys inflicted on King’s Landing could not fail to be listed in the initials. We see, in fact, the capital of the Seven Kingdoms and the Red Keep destroyed, moreover, behind the Throne of Swords no longer appears the Lion of the Lannisters that, however, is not replaced by the seal of the Targaryen.
Daenerys’ speech
The episode opens with a totally destroyed view of the King’s Landing and Daenerys that presents itself to the Unsullied and the Dothraki as Sovereign of the Seven Kingdoms. Here she makes his first speech as Queen that makes even her greatest supporters lose hope. In fact, the Mother of Dragons has no intention of stopping, but she wants to continue to “free” all the other cities.
Her words sound vaguely familiar, both because they were already spoken by herself in season six, and because they contain exactly what Khal Drogo promised her in the first season.
Love is the death of duty
If there’s a phrase emblematic of this last episode, it’s “Love is the death of duty”, which Jon tells Tyrion, adding that it was told to him by Aegon Targaryen at the Wall. Here, Aegon not only tells it to Jon when the latter wants to leave the Night’s Watch to go with the Brutes, but he also repeats it to Sam.
If at the Wall neither Jon nor Sam knew what to say to Aegon, this time Tyrion knows very well what to say to Jon: “Sometimes duty is the death of love”, reversing the situation and succeeding in convincing Jon of what to do.
Lord of the Rings
Some of the most attentive and passionate fans of this genre have found many similarities with the fantasy movie par excellence, Lord of the Rings.
First of all, the figures of Gollum and Daenerys and their uncontrollable obsession with two objects have been compared. Inevitably, even the latter have been compared, namely the ring and the throne, both for the effect they have on those who want to take them, both for the fate that awaits them. Both, in the end, are destroyed, fused by the flames.
Another element in common between the HBO series and the film is the destiny designed for the protagonists.
At the end of the third episode of Lord of the Rings – The Return of the King we might think that Sam and Frodo will live in the County and, instead, the protagonist decides to leave with Gandalf and Bilbo, greeting his friend forever. So also the GoT, we all hoped that the Stark would never be divided and, on the contrary, everyone decides to take a different path. In addition, the construction of the scene in which Jon starts is practically identical to that of Frodo’s departure.
Brienne
The scene in which we see Brienne update the White Book of the Kingsguard, that is, the one in which all the deeds of the Royal Guards are told, is full of small symbols that might go unnoticed, but that is of fundamental importance. The first is the seal on the armor of Brienne depicting a crow, so it turns out to be the symbol of Bran. The second can be seen by reading well what he writes about Jaime Lannister, we discover that the battle in which the King Exterminator clashes for the first time against Daenerys is nicknamed Battle of Goldroad.
In addition, it is no coincidence that a scene is dedicated to updating the heroic deeds of Jaime We remember in fact that the young Lion was denigrated by his nephew Joffrey for the lack of news reported on him. Now we know that every single action of Jaime Lannister will be remembered forever.
Arya
To some, Arya’s choice to go west might seem daring or, even worse, span the air, but it shouldn’t surprise us that much. It was the young Stark, in the sixth season, who confided to the actress of the Braavos theatre company that nobody knew what was west of Westeros and that it would be nice to discover it.
The beginning and the end
Although many fans were disappointed with the finale and some even thought of petitioning and proposing to turn the last season around completely, it cannot be said that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss didn’t think of closing the circle they started in the first season.
If you remember, the pilot episode of the series started at the Barrier Reef, with three Night’s Watch walking towards the Brutes’ lands. Not by chance, in the last scene of The Iron Throne we see Jon, Ghost, Tormund and the Brutes returning to the lands free as free men, this time without the impending fear of the White Walkers.

In summary, it doesn’t matter if we agree or disagree with the ending we saw, if our favorite character had the end he deserved or not, if it is right that Bran sited on the Throne of Swords or if the Stark brothers have split taking different paths. The beauty of the TV series remains and will always be surprised, hoping for something and at the same time hope that it does not happen.
