Giacomo Zamai and Indonesia’s Overtourism

Giacomo Zamai has been involved in photography for twenty years, and although he no longer takes photos professionally, he continues to carry his trusted Ricoh GR on his travels, aiming to document his experiences through a holistic approach, as he describes it. He doesn’t try to hide the human presence of tourists (after all, we now live in the age of overtourism, one of the hottest topics of this past summer). Instead, the photographer’s work seeks to integrate this type of tourism—sometimes aggressive—by emphasizing it, alternating with more authentic, indigenous landscapes. The goal is to create a coherent narrative that portrays the reality of these trips—without embellishments or the usual lies we tell ourselves on social media.
