Good Guys Guide, a guide to women’s street safety

Violence against women is still a serious unresolved problem. It is one of the most hidden social phenomena, an endemic issue exercised in public and private places that manifests itself in verbal, physical and psychological forms.
In response to the current conversation about safety on the streets and the systematic deterioration of the situation, agency M&C Saatchi, in collaboration with Solace Women’s Aid and Token Man, has created a new advertising campaign to make women feel safer on the streets and teach men how to act about it. The initiative is called Good Guys Guide and is in effect an illustrated guide.

“We know that a lot more needs to be done to address violence and harassment against women at a higher level, but this campaign aims to at least start a conversation around the role that men can play to make sure that women feel more comfortable. We hope it will also inspire many of them to take the next step to become active allies and take more concrete actions to make the streets a safe space for everyone.”

Good Guys Guide introduces a series of simple rules that men should follow to make women feel safer on the streets and meanwhile tries to make them realise that even the most harmless people can be perceived as a threat.

The campaign consists of 7 simple rules to follow, illustrated with straightforward typographical images showing in a didactic way the situations to avoid.
The seventh and final rule invites men to help spread the word among their friends and thus trigger an active conversation about the role of men as efficient allies of women.

Good Guys Guide recognises that it is not the responsibility of women to take precautions to avoid harassment and meanwhile calls men to action to make them active allies.
