The hype for Inside Out 2 – before its release in theaters – was at an all-time high. Believe it or not, it has been nine years since the release of Inside Out, one of the most beloved Pixar animated films by children (and many adults too). Riley is a girl who faces the joys and pains of growing up, and the animated film shows what happens inside her, taking us on a fascinating journey. Riley’s emotions return to narrate step by step the protagonist’s puberty with some additions. The new entries – joining Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust – are Anxiety, Envy, Boredom, Embarrassment, and Nostalgia. Thanks to the profile of Pixar character designer Crystal Kung, we discovered that there were supposed to be others like Guilt, Suspicion, and Awe. The designer, in fact, shared some sketches depicting these emotions – left behind in the making of the Inside Out sequel – on her Instagram profile.
The sketches of Guilt in two cases depict a heavy backpack on the shoulders of a round purple character with oval features. Suspicion, on the other hand, had six alternatives ready for use. Our favorite is certainly number three, a character with many eyes and a helmet. Awe seems to be the least developed emotion of the three – but no less capable of astonishing us. In this case, the sketches depict a cute chubby baby, a positive surfing dude, or a young Keanu Reeves as inspiration.
Before showing the sketches of the discarded emotions, Crystal Kung also made a post revealing the behind-the-scenes of Nostalgia, one of the most interesting characters in the new animated film, which eventually made it to the big screen with pink glasses and soft, white hair. The final result in theaters still surprised and satisfied us even after seeing Kung’s sketches. In short, we just hope we don’t have to wait another nine years to find out what other emotions will appear in a possible Inside Out 3.
